The Royal Castle in Krakow was built at the behest of King Cashmir III the Great, it consists of a number of structures from different periods situated around the Italian Style Main Courtyard. The castle, being one of the largest in Poland, represents nearly all European architectural styles of medieval, renaissance and baroque periods. The Wawel Royal Castle and the Wawel Hill constitute the most historically and culturally significant site in the country. For centuries the residence of the Kings of Poland and the symbol of Polish statehood, Wawel Castle is now one of the country's premier art museums. The Deputies Hall still retains much of its timber carving, most notable its coffered ceiling with thirty Gothic Style carved heads by Sebastian Tauerbach, from Lusatia who arrived in Kraków in 1535 and woodcarver Hans. The originals were carved in 1540 to remind the King of the people he represents, who looked from above every decision he made.  Deputies Hall (Sala Poselska) was a site of Parliament hearings with the King. It was also where the King was receiving delegations. The most intriguing and unique part of this chamber is the ceiling. The coffered ceiling is adorned with sculptures of little heads of men and women. Originally there were 194 heads, but due to tumultuous past of the Castle, only 30 are preserved. Meaning of the ceiling is allegorical, heads depict people of a different class: kings, soldiers, courtiers.
