Charles Duncker Sr., President of Trorlicht-Duncker was one of the oldest carpet houses in St. Louis which was founded by his father Henry Duncker. Henry Duncker was born in Germany in 1836 and emigrated to Saint Louis during the Civil War. The company closed in the late 1930's. Charles Duncker Sr.'s son, Charles H. Duncker Jr., who had graduated from Washington University in 1914, enlisted in the army in 1917 after working for his father’s firm. He was commissioned as a lieutenant before deployment to France in May 1918. Less than six months later, Charles Duncker was killed while serving in WWI. Dedicated in October 1924, Charles Duncker Jr. Hall housed the School of Commerce and Finance. This hall was a gift to the university by Charles H. Duncker Sr., in memory of his son. Duncker Jr. graduated with a Bachelor of Arts degree from Washington University in 1914 with Phi Beta Kappa honors (the Washington University chapter of Phi Beta Kappa was chartered in 1913, which made Duncker part of the first group of students to be so honored). Charles Duncker Sr. passed away in 1952.
