Description

A vintage 1940s color illustration by Ed McDonald showing the Industrial Rayon Corporation's new $11,500,000 air-conditioned, windowless plant in Painesville, Ohio. The plant covers 14 acres and at the time, contained the largest area of glass block of any plant in America. The plant had a capacity of 12,000,000 pounds of highest quality rayon yarns a year. The power house, 168 feet by 132 feet, houses three H. P. boilers and three 5000 K.V.A. turbines.

Following the glory days of World War II synthetic fibers such as nylon and other polymers provided competition in the market place. After the adjustment to peace-time manufacturing demands and during the industrial movement to diversify, Industrial Rayon Corporation was purchased by Midland-Ross Co., another Cleveland company supporting the automotive industry. As a division of Midland-Ross, the rayon manufacturing division was known as IRC Fibers. IRC Fibers became a division of American Cyanamid of New Jersey in 1969.

This large illustration board shows some discoloration and staining on the left lower portion and along the bottom.
