Vintage 1965 Hydraulic Barber Chair by Kochs

Be sure to check out the Video below on how to operate this fully functional chair!

Reserve of $375

Kochs barber chairs are very popular to antique collectors. The Theo. A. Kochs Company was one of the first companies to be in the barber supply business. It was established in Chicago during the late 1800’s (estimated to be around 1871). According to its Spring 1888 catalog, the company’s factory was situated far north of the Chicago River:

Kochs barber chairs are made with high quality materials, that’s why they are reputable. Before the turn of the 20th century, most of the company’s barber chair designs were made of wood (mostly Walnut, Cherry or Mahogany) with elaborate ornamentation. The earlier models, which were plainly named No. 9, No. 5 or No. 25, had a separate footstool. These models didn’t have mechanisms for adjusting the height, so the company charged extra for an accessory to raise the seat.

This model is No. 1965.  I believe it was actually built in 1960.  Kochs was one of the first companies to use an hydraulic lifts in their chairs.  This one is in full working order and includes the following:

  • foot rest
  • adjustable head rest
  • sliding child's bench
  • ash tray built into the arm
  • barber's double leather sharpening strap
  • more than likely a leather seat and headrest
  • pump the lever to go up; and put the lever completely down to release the chair down
  • tilt the lever away from the chair (while straight up and down), to release the back of the chair to go back.
  • extra hydraulic fluid comes with the chair.  It holds 1 qt (2 pints)
  • if ever the chair is separated from the base, watch for dripping fluid, the pin at the center of the chair-pole (cannot be bent or damaged), and a steel "block" that just sits in place.  It will fall out when the chair is separated from the base.  (It gets put back in, notch side facing outwards).
