Description

Musicians Sword is Stamped N. P. Ames Cabotville 1848 has a 32" Blade and Brass Handle with Light Oxidation.

The 1840 Sword for Non-Commissioned Officers, commonly known as the NCO Sword; the other is the M. 1840 Sword for Musicians and Drummers. The NCO sword was officially worn in full-dress by all enlisted men having one of the various sergeant ranks, such as company 1st, 2d, 3rd, and 4th sergeants; and regimental sergeant-majors, ordnance, and commissary sergeants. These served as badges of rank as much as did chevrons and red worsted wool sashes. The swords were worn on the left side suspended from an over-the-right-shoulder baldric that was of white buff leather during the Mexican War but changed to smooth black leather in the 1850's.
