Also known as the 20th century Audubon, John Ruthven was an artist with the rare ability to combine visual excitement, creative design, and authentic detail. John’s original paintings and limited-edition prints can be found all over the world, including the White House, Presidential Palace in the Philippines, and The Smithsonian, while commissions from non-profit organizations have helped raise millions of dollars for their various projects. John is one of the most celebrated and decorated wildlife artists in history. 

The 1982 Ohio Wetlands Habitat Stamp, “the first-of-state”, depicted a pair of wood ducks and was designed through a special commission by John Ruthven of Georgetown, Ohio. These first-of-state Wetlands Habitat Stamps were sold at a price of $5.75 from August 1982 to December 31, 1983. A total of 41,319 stamps were sold in this first year of issue to waterfowl hunters, wildlife conservationists, and collectors.
