Description

This boat was purchased new by the owner in 1970 and was lightly used through 1984 after which it was stored inside a garage for the last 40 years.

The O’Day Javelin was designed by Uffa Fox and approximately 5,100 were produced from 1960 until 1989. Boat is fiberglass with wood trim and weigh about 475lbs. Boat has a kick-up rudder controlled by a tiller and could take up to a 5-8hp outboard (depending on your source of info). Centerboard is retractable. Draft is 3’ 10” with the centerboard down. Large cockpit with a 4’ 6” beam at the waterline, generous given it’s 14’ length. Roomy enough for 5-6 people and stable enough to walk around on. Self-bailing, has aluminum spars/mast.

Boat could use a good cleaning after years of storage, but the fiberglass, given it’s light use and years of indoor storage looks to be in good shape as expected with no obvious cracks, holes or damage. The owner noted one professional repair that had been made years ago to the mast. We did not pull out/open the sails to check them out as they are original (50+ years old). Assume that even if they look good, they may not be once you set sail… Replacement sails are available online.

Note: Make sure you have access to a utility or car trailer etc. that can haul both the boat and trailer. The trailer needs to go with the boat but is not considered functional/road worthy at this time. Tires are low/flat, and may be dry rotted. The wheel hubs/bearings could be frozen from years of sitting. Shouldn’t cost much for a new set of tires and repacking/replace the bearings, but you will need to tend to that once you get it home. Past that, wire brush it down, coat it with POR-15 or another rust preventive coating and go sailing!

We have set a reasonable reserve. Selling/asking prices for similar boats are $800-1200. J.D. Power estimates an average selling price of $840. We are well below that. Consider this like a low mileage vehicle. This one just needs some trailer TLC and new sails and you will have years of enjoyment on the cheap. Don’t miss out!

Note: Bid increments for this auction are $25, start to finish.
